Overview
A 2D echocardiogram, often called an Echo, uses ultrasound to create moving images of the heart. A clinician may request it to assess the heart’s chambers, valves and pumping function, depending on the clinical question.
What you may need to know
The investigation is performed with an ultrasound probe placed on the chest and gel used to help obtain images. The test is non-invasive. Preparation, duration and reporting arrangements can vary, so follow instructions from the appointment team.
Questions and next steps
Ask the healthcare professional who requested the test what they are looking to assess, when and how you will receive the report, and who will explain the results. Do not interpret an image on the screen as a diagnosis.
