Overview
A 12 Lead ECG is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart from several viewpoints. It is commonly used as part of a healthcare professional’s assessment of heart rate, rhythm and electrical patterns.
What you may need to know
Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin, usually on the chest, arms and legs. You may be asked to lie still while the tracing is recorded. The test itself is usually brief, although appointment and reporting time may vary.
Questions and next steps
The ECG recording should be interpreted by an appropriately qualified professional alongside your symptoms, medical history and any other required investigations. A normal-looking tracing does not rule out every heart problem.
